Protectors of The Holy City and the Most Holy — and the Church’s inquisitors, empowered since the Third Crusade to root out the Arts of the Corrupted anywhere.
History
- “Once founded as the order of the day” — an aside in an imperial-era book (last emperor mentioned: Appius VI) in the Balventia library. The order’s original name apparently honored the Day Court. (S7) See The Orders of the Five Courts.
- The most powerful and far-reaching of the western Orders (GM) — it also supervises matters crossing the kingdom Orders’ jurisdictions.
- Watched over the Colleges from their founding, lest the Arts of the Corrupted take root.
- After the Great Betrayal (Third Crusade), granted sweeping authority over even the most powerful rulers.
- Their overreach created Hazad’s independence: their false accusation against Hazad’s crown prince — Crown Prince Dakheer (GM), Sultan Fahim’s older brother — triggered the Fourth Crusade and the East-West schism. They have been cast out of Hazad for ~40 years; the Eagle’s Eyes were created to do the work they left behind.
- The standard Hazadi reading of the Dakheer affair is not that Phoenix knights are fools — the opposite: the order is known to be disciplined, learned, and highly capable, which makes its failure the proof that competence and certainty do not guarantee correctness. (GM)
- A “Knight-Confessor” is a specialized doctrinal investigator and enforcer — not a hearer of confessions (all ordained knights are already priests). The title is reserved for difficult cases: heresy, Corruption, dangerous magic, senior clergy, cross-jurisdiction matters. That is the office Gandolfini and Madeline Foussard held — the Phoenix sent its heavy investigators at this campaign twice. (GM)
- The Phoenix has long been associated with Gifts of investigation, detection, and divination — ordinary educated knowledge, per the primer, not a secret. (GM)
- Confiscated many books from Al-Hakim University, likely now in the Holy City. (S3)
Motto
“Revealing Light, Purifying Fire.”
In the Campaign
-
Knight-Confessor Gandolfini, with Bren and Arnolf, was smuggled into Hazad with coded documents and the bound elf Ari; Gandolfini died in the ambush at the drop-off. (S1) See Why Did the Phoenix Knights Come to Hazad.
-
The documents are Phoenix interrogations of Order of the Owl members about three uncovered sanctums. (S2) See The Recovered Documents and The Sanctum Investigation.
-
They bind elves to service: Ari served Knight-Confessor Adalberto before Gandolfini. (S1) See Ari and the Ring.
-
Madeline Foussard, a knight-confessor, was captured at Kraus’s Folly in ~Spring 1732 (GM) while hunting Constanza Bethlen — and transformed by a blood ritual into something the Order itself would burn. She is alive in Halwa and talking to the party. (S5) Four Phoenix knights died in Constanza’s escape from custody in Averoigne.
-
Gandolfini was dean of the University of Krenau — the Order sent a scholar, not a courier, into Hazad with the sanctum documents. (S5)
What the GM Timeline Adds (all GM)
- Summer 1731: the Order supplied several Phoenix Knights to Matthias Melnich, Prince of Strelitz, for a private witchcraft prosecution carried across a border into Vyones. Madeline Foussard took charge of the case and declined to execute.
- Madeline was tutor to Marie-Celeste de la Courcel, the designated heir to Averoigne — a knight-confessor placed inside a royal household before that household became the centre of a succession war. She was appointed in anticipation of the legitimization (GM, S6), i.e. before Marie-Celeste was an heir at all. Marie-Celeste had been raised in a monastery until then.
Speculation
The Order had advance knowledge of Etienne’s deathbed intentions. You cannot appoint a tutor “in anticipation” of a legitimization you have not been told about. Two weeks after the designation, the heir and the Owl’s commander were murdered in the royal castle. That does not make the Phoenix the assassins — but it puts them on the very short list of people who knew early. See The Night in the Royal Castle.
- Summer 1731: four Phoenix knights died guarding Constanza Bethlen on the night the heir was assassinated.
- Spring 1736: the Order accused the Order of the Owl of having fallen to the Deceiver. The Owl was dissolved and its members questioned and executed. The Phoenix ran that purge — and its interrogation records are almost certainly the papers the party is carrying.
- The Most Holy at the time — and now — is Baldessare Malipiero, Pious III, whose person this Order is sworn to protect. See On the Summoning of Guardian Spirits.
What S7 Adds
- Knowledge of Benedicto Malipiero was purged by the Order — together with his own family. (Per Countess Balventia.) The Owl found his signed book anyway, in a war zone, twenty-two years later. What a purge misses is sometimes more interesting than what it destroys.
- The party’s divination research advanced without touching the Order directly: True Divination is a real Church ritual art with named practitioners across three crusades — Blessed Benedict (Third), the Phoenix itself (Fourth, per Uncle’s recollection), Salemon Fouquier (Fifth — pro/con only, per the book). The party’s analysis: the Western Church likely holds divination rituals similar to what Estelle does — specifically similar to Benedict’s practice. See The Faith of the Maker.
What S6 Adds
- Uncle’s Men suspect Estelle is Phoenix. No proof — a suspicion, from Uncle and Maajid. Supporting it: Uncle personally remembers mention of the Order using divination magic during the war, forty years ago. Worth researching discreetly through Lusia Balventia or her scholars.
- Benedicto Malipiero is the younger brother of Pious III — the Most Holy whose person this Order is sworn to protect. Convicted of heresy and condemned by his own family ~1710, for dealing with the infernal; he had mastered both the divine and the logos arts; officially executed, though Uncle’s Men doubt it. The Order dissolved and executed the Order of the Owl four years after the Owl recovered his signed demonological manual. See On the Summoning of Guardian Spirits.
- Visenne de Tarrand, an Owl knight, independently confirms the Order took custody of Constanza Bethlen after her transfer from Morrschatten to Averoigne on a witchcraft charge.
- Madeline Foussard was rumored to be Marc Abayante’s paramour (Visenne, S6) — a Phoenix knight-confessor and the head of the order the Phoenix would later destroy.
Speculation
Forty years of divination. Strengthened (GM): the Orders primer states the Phoenix’s association with divination Gifts is common knowledge. If the Order has had reliable divination since the Fourth Crusade, then everything the party has assumed about how the Phoenix finds things needs revising — including how Gandolfini knew where to land in Hazad, and how anyone located three sanctums. And if Estelle is theirs, the Order is currently running a knowledge-exchange operation into the dreams of a Hazadi noble while formally banned from the country.
Against it, hard: Estelle preaches the Six Voices to strangers, and the Phoenix executed an entire order for less proximity to this material than she hands out in a night.
Known Members
- Gandolfini (deceased; dean of Krenau) · Madeline Foussard (transformed; in Halwa) · Bren and Arnolf (captured by Uncle’s Men) · Adalberto (Ari’s previous master; status unknown)
Speculation
The Owl’s executioners are also the Owl’s archive. Every fact the party has about the sanctums comes from documents the Phoenix produced while destroying the men who found them. That is not a neutral source; it is a prosecution file. The party has been reading it as a report.
Speculation
The Order keeps turning up in this campaign one step behind something: a knight-confessor imprisoned seven years at the Folly, another killed at a smuggler’s drop-off, four more dead in a witchcraft escape. If the Phoenix is hunting the same thread the party is, they are losing people to it at a rate that should worry everyone.
