The desert guide Achmed hired to take the party to the Sanctum of Sethariel — and, five years ago, the man who took the Owl knights there too.
What We Know (all S5)
- Very weather-beaten; wears loose clothes that cover him completely. Speaks strongly accented Hazadi.
- Camps at a small oasis about an hour outside Halwa. From there it is one day to the oasis and one more to the temple site.
- Achmed paid; Mamud supplied everything, including travelling clothes. He agreed to wait three evenings at the oasis.
- He guided a party of westerners to the same site a few years back — before the Owl/Eagle battle (itself 3–4 years ago), so ~5+ years ago. They had a dwarf with them. They came back nervous.
Why He Matters
He is the only known living witness to the Order of the Owl’s expedition to sanctum #1 — the trip that plausibly ends with Owl knights being interrogated by the Order of the Phoenix in The Recovered Documents. He also, presumably, saw whatever state they were in when they came out.
Speculation
Nobody asked Mamud the obvious follow-ups: how many westerners, what did they carry out, did they all come back? He guided them and the party to a place that has now battered one group and cursed another — a man who has been to the gash more often than anyone alive and shows no sign of having gone down the stairs.
