Constanza Bethlen

A deposed house’s secret daughter, raised to be a prince’s bride, accused of witchcraft, and pursued across two kingdoms — the name Madeline Foussard crossed the Circle Sea to make sure someone knew. She is also, by blood, the rightful ruler of Morrschatten, and she carries the Betrayer Queen’s gift. (GM)

What We Know (all S5, via Madeline)

  • About 20 years old now. Dark hair. Very attractive.
  • House Bethlen ruled Marschatten until it was deposed after the Third Crusade (1446), when the kingdom was divided into three princedoms. The house was reduced to holding the city of Krenau — and Constanza is from a side branch of it.
  • Raised in secret from at least the age of five, groomed to be the bride of one of the princes. That prince was killed in the civil war (The Troubles). (Two separate statements from Madeline. She said nothing about how they relate in time — see Contradictions.)
  • She escaped with the help of some Owl knights and went to Averoigne, seeking protection from her pursuers.
  • In Averoigne she was accused of witchcraft; Madeline Foussard oversaw the case and believed her innocent.
  • She escaped, and four Phoenix knights were slain. Madeline traced her to Halwa, and a rumour of her to Kraus’s Folly — where the swordsman took Madeline instead.
  • Madeline’s own verdict has swung: innocent → doubtful after the escape → maybe innocent again.
  • Her relationship to the man who captured Madeline is unknown — that she has one is the specific thing Madeline wanted put on record.

The Gift and the Claim (GM, per Madeline)

This is the part that reframes everything else:

  • She probably has the House Bethlen gift, or something very similar — the same gift possessed by the Betrayer Queen of Morrschatten, the sorceress who defected to Iuz at the climax of the Third Crusade.
  • At sixteen she was already a notably powerful sorceress, by the standards of the current age.
  • The Bethlen gift was not considered Corrupted until the aftermath of the Third Crusade. It was declared so afterward — which is to say, the gift was reclassified along with the dynasty that carried it.
  • She has a better blood claim on the throne of Morrschatten than any of the three princes — a claim the current Church would never accept, but a claim nonetheless.
  • Madeline’s speculation: Matthias Melnich was raising her in secret to bolster his own claim through marriage.

What that answers

  • “Was the witchcraft accusation true?” — In the Church’s post-Third-Crusade terms, essentially yes: she holds a gift the Church rules Corrupted and she is very good with it. Which makes Madeline’s refusal to execute her far more interesting than it looked. Madeline was not misjudging the evidence; she was declining to apply the ruling.
  • “Who were her pursuers?” — her guardian. And the reason a guardian sends knights to burn a bride he spent fifteen years raising: once she was outside his control, she stopped being a claim he could marry and became a claim that could be used against him. A dead Bethlen heir is safer than a free one.
  • Why the Order of the Owl helped her. They were in Morrschatten specifically to assess the conflict among the three princes. They found a girl with a better claim than all three, in secret custody. Whatever they thought they were doing, “rescuing a frightened ward” is the smallest possible reading.
  • The Krenau connection tightens. House Bethlen’s last holding was Krenau; Prince Udo sacked it in Fall 1731, months after Constanza fled — and the university burned.

Speculation

This effectively confirms House Bethlen is the Betrayer Queen’s house. Same gift, deposed after the Third Crusade, gift declared Corrupted after the Third Crusade, kingdom partitioned in the same settlement. The wiki has carried that as unconfirmed since S5; it should now be treated as all-but-established, though the GM did not say it in those words. See Morrschatten.

Which means: the party’s fugitive is a direct inheritor of the single greatest act of betrayal in Church history, carrying the power that made it possible. Any western authority that learns she is alive has a reason to want her dead that has nothing to do with four dead guards.

Speculation

Now reconsider the lord of Kraus’s Folly. A man with a Celestial-runed warp circle, a garrison’s provisions, and a programme of blood ritual, who has some relationship with a woman who is simultaneously a powerful Corrupted-gift sorceress and the rightful queen of Morrschatten. “Prisoner or partner” was always the question; the stakes of the answer just went up considerably.

The 1720 Massacre (S6, via Uncle’s Men)

The single biggest addition, and it rewrites her childhood:

  • The Bethlens were the lords of Krenau until 1720, when the whole family was murdered — supposedly including Constanza.
  • She is about twenty now, so in 1720 she was an infant. She has been officially dead her entire life.
  • Kristof Gruben, lord mayor of Krenau, took over the city after the Bethlens and died about three years ago (~1736).
  • Amalricht von-Haup, the Bethlens’ court magician and tutor, survived and entered the service of Matthias Melnich — Constanza’s guardian. He is Uncle’s Men’s candidate for the builder of the warp circle at Kraus’s Folly, and he also died about three years ago.

What that answers, and what it makes worse

  • “Raised in secret from at least the age of five” (Madeline, S5) now has a floor and a reason. She was hidden from age nought, because the world was told she died with her family.
  • Melnich’s motive gets colder. Madeline’s read was that he raised her to bolster his claim by marriage. But she came into his hands as an infant survivor of a massacre — so either he sheltered a baby and later found a use for her, or he was close enough to the 1720 killings to collect the one survivor.
  • Owl knights recognised her in 1731. Visiting knights assessing the princes met a girl who had been legally dead for eleven years, and got her out. Somebody told them who she was.
  • Two men from that story died in the same year, ~1736 — von-Haup and Gruben. The Owl was dissolved and executed in Spring 1736.

Speculation

Who murdered the Bethlens in 1720? Nobody has asked. The house had been stripped to a single city for 274 years and posed no threat to anyone — unless somebody had worked out what the wiki now believes: that the Bethlen bloodline carries the Betrayer Queen’s gift and a better claim to Morrschatten than any of the three princes. Exterminating them is exactly what you’d do about that. Sparing one infant is exactly what you’d do if you wanted the claim in a box you controlled.

Speculation

The court magician knew both halves of her life. Amalricht von-Haup taught the Bethlens, survived their massacre, and went to work for the man who then secretly raised the surviving Bethlen. If anyone knew who she was before Madeline did, it was him — and he died ~1736.

The wiki previously extended this to the Kraus’s Folly circle, making him the link between Constanza and the swordsman. Retracted: Uncle and Ismad were only speculating that he could perform such a ritual, and nothing confirms it (GM). The Melnich-household-to-Folly connection currently has no mechanism at all.

What the GM Timeline Adds (all GM)

  • She was the charge of Matthias Melnich, Prince of Strelitz — the only princedom of Morrschatten bordering Averoigne.
  • Spring/Summer 1731: Owl knights sent to Morrschatten to assess the political situation among the three princes encountered her. She appealed to them for aid, and they helped her leave for Vyones. The rescue was opportunistic, not a mission.
  • Summer 1731: Melnich sent his personal priest and several Phoenix Knights to Vyones to accuse her of witchcraft. Madeline Foussard took the case and declined to execute her, imprisoning her under anti-sorcery conditions.
  • Summer 1731, the night of the assassinations: she escaped, and the four Phoenix knights guarding her were slain — the same night Marie-Celeste de la Courcel and Marc Abayante were murdered in the royal castle. See The Night in the Royal Castle.
  • She has been at large since. Madeline traced her in under a year to Halwa, and a rumour of her to Kraus’s Folly, where the swordsman took Madeline instead in ~Spring 1732 (GM). So Constanza reached the Circle Sea’s far shore within months of escaping Vyones — which is fast, for a fugitive with no money and no country.

Contradictions & Oddities

  • The prince who died. Retracted — this contradiction was manufactured by the wiki. (GM, 2026-08-01)

    The wiki said “Madeline told the party Constanza fled after that prince was killed in the civil war,” and then spent four pages trying to reconcile that with the dates. Madeline never said it. The S5 notes have two adjacent bullets and no link between them: “That prince was killed in the civil war” and “She somehow escaped with the help of some Owl knights.” The “after” was the wiki’s own insertion.

    With it removed, nothing conflicts. She fled in Spring/Summer 1731; the War of the Three Princes began that same summer; so her intended groom was killed at some point after she was already gone. The sequence is clean.

    What that leaves open is better than what it closed: her flight had nothing to do with his death, and the reason she ran is entirely unexplained. She appealed to Owl knights for aid (GM) while her intended marriage was, as far as anyone knows, still on.

  • Her guardian tried to burn her. Melnich did not send men to retrieve a bride he had raised in secret for fifteen years; he sent a priest and Phoenix knights across a border to have her executed for witchcraft. Something happened in that household that neither account explains.

  • A cell warded against sorcery did not hold her — on the one night in the year when the capital was full of professional killers.

Why She Matters

The party has been looking for the owner of a comb with strands of black hair in a lord’s chamber at Kraus’s Folly, sized for an average-to-petite woman (S4). A dark-haired woman of about twenty, tied somehow to that chamber’s tall blond occupant, is the first candidate anyone has offered.

Speculation

Two readings, and they change everything downstream:

  • Prisoner/prize. A bride-in-waiting whose prince died, escaping her handlers, run to ground by a man who keeps a warp circle and a garrison’s provisions. The Folly is where she was taken, and the noble lady’s effects are hers.
  • Partner. She escaped Phoenix custody in a way that left four knights dead, which is not usually the work of an innocent. If she is with the swordsman by choice, the Folly is her base too.

Speculation

Owl knights helped her escape Morrschatten. The Owl also found the sanctums, also came to Halwa twice, and was dissolved for corruption. Whatever the Owl was actually doing in its last years, Constanza is inside it. The timeline sharpens this: the knights who took her out were in Morrschatten assessing the princes, and within months their commander was dead, their order was captured by a placeman, and she was loose. Speculation

She is the one person who is at both ends of this story. She was extracted by the Owl; the Owl’s leadership was massacred the night she escaped; the Owl was destroyed five years later; and a rumour of her led Madeline to the man with a Celestial-runed warp circle above Halwa — the city nearest sanctum #1. Whether she is the cause, the payload, or the coincidence is the question.

Corroboration (S6)

Visenne de Tarrand, an Owl knight who never met her, confirms the outline independently from inside the order: Constanza appealed to Owl knights for help, was taken from Morrschatten to Averoigne, charged with witchcraft, and taken by the Order of the Phoenix. The party’s western chronology no longer rests solely on Madeline and the GM.

Relationships

Open Questions

  • Is she at Kraus’s Folly now — or was she ever?
  • Was the witchcraft accusation true? → In Church terms, effectively yes — she carries the Bethlen/Betrayer Queen gift, ruled Corrupted since the Third Crusade. (GM) The open question is now why Madeline declined to execute her anyway.
  • Does she know what she is — the gift’s history, and the claim?
  • Who were the “pursuers” she fled Morrschatten to escape? → Matthias Melnich, her own guardian. (GM) Why remains open.
  • Who got her out of the cell? Sympathetic owl knights, the assassins, or herself.
  • Which prince was she meant to marry? He was killed in the War of the Three Princes, so he died after she fled (the war began Summer 1731). The wiki’s leading candidate is now Matthias Melnich himself — her guardian, murdered Spring 1734, and the man Madeline believed was raising her to bolster his own claim through marriage. Unconfirmed, and the other two princes are unnamed.
  • Why did she actually run? With the fabricated “her groom died, so she fled” removed, there is no stated reason. She appealed to visiting Owl knights for aid (GM) while her intended marriage was, as far as anyone knows, still on.
  • Who murdered her family in 1720, and why then? (S6)
  • Does she know she was supposed to have died as an infant — and who told her otherwise?
  • How did Owl knights on a political errand come to know who a legally dead girl was?

(Naming: session notes give both “Bethlem” and “Bethlen”; the wiki uses Bethlen, the form used twice for the house. Flag if that’s backwards.)
