Lord Mayor of Krenau — the man who took the city after House Bethlen was massacred in 1720. Died about three years ago (~1736). (S6)

What We Know (all S6, via Ismad)

  • Took over Krenau after the Bethlens — i.e. he is who the city passed to when the whole family was murdered in 1720.
  • Died about three years ago — ~1736.

That is the entirety of the record.

Why He Matters

Somebody benefited from the 1720 massacre, and it was him. Whether he was the beneficiary or the author is not established, and nobody has looked.

He also held Krenau through everything the party cares about: Prince Udo’s sack in Fall 1731, the fire at the university with Owl knights researching sanctums inside it, and the years afterward when Gandolfini was its dean. If the city has records of what survived that fire, Gruben’s administration made them.

Speculation

The city “fell unexpectedly quickly.” (GM, Fall 1731) It was held by a lord mayor, not a lord — a man with no dynasty, no blood claim, and a house-city stripped to nothing. Quick surrenders are what such men are for. He then apparently kept his position, or at least his life, for another five years.

Speculation

He and Amalricht von-Haup died in the same year (~1736) — the year the Order of the Owl was dissolved and executed. Two men whose lives ran through Krenau and House Bethlen, gone in one year. Get causes of death before building anything on it, but get them.

Open Questions

  • Who murdered the Bethlens in 1720, and how did Gruben come to hold the city afterward?
  • How did he die?
  • What happened to Krenau’s records — and its university’s — under him?
  • Who holds Krenau now?
