A man who tells the diggers at the ruined town on the pilgrim’s road where to dig for money — “sometimes he’s right, sometimes wrong, so they say.” Named by the locals who ambushed the party; not met. (S8)
What We Know
- Per the diggers: he tells them places to dig for money; sometimes he’s right, sometimes wrong. (S8)
- The diggers had spent weeks, with multiple people, excavating down to a cellar with multiple rooms at the ruins. (S8) See The Mirror Lake.
- That is everything. Half the diggers were killed by the party; the rest fled — possibly back to him. (S8)
Speculation
Speculation
Gaius is an Old Imperial name, in ruin country beyond the border, at a waypoint on the road the party is following to a possible sanctum. How does he pick where to dig? Old maps, local lore, divination, or guesswork dressed up — “sometimes right, sometimes wrong” fits a real method and a con. If he is working from the same kind of sources as the party (the pilgrim’s route; Imperial maps like the ones House Menenia hoards), the party is not the only one on this road.
Speculation (S9)
The road past his dig is a pilgrimage route in current use — old campsites, an apparently used storeroom at the lakeside fort, and Corrupted wardens demanding a “pilgrim’s sign” at the end of it. A man who knows which ruins on that road are worth digging might know why. Nothing links him to any of it yet. See The Pilgrim’s Sign.
